This second volume of Gerald Hendrie’s complete works for the organ brings together the three substantial sonatas composed between 1994 and 2005. In Praise of Reconciliation (1995–96) is a large-scale meditation on war, forgiveness, and peace, written in memory of Evelyn Lee Witherspoon. Evoking the devastation of Coventry and Dresden during World War II, it weaves the Coventry Carol, the Dresden Amen, and Shaker hymns into a compelling musical narrative. In Praise of St Asaph (1994) honours both the city’s patron saint and the late composer William Mathias. Commissioned for the North Wales Music Festival, it integrates plainsong within a four-part structure of dramatic breadth and spiritual intensity. Sonate en Trio (2005), modelled on Bach’s trio sonatas, unites Italianate brilliance with contrapuntal ingenuity; its slow movement a remarkable palindrome in strict canon. Forming the centrepiece of his organ works, these sonatas represent a landmark in Hendrie’s output and a cornerstone of contemporary organ literature. They stand among his most substantial achievements for the instrument, distinguished by their scale, technical demands, and expressive range. This volume forms part of Gerald Hendrie: The Complete Works for Organ, a four-volume edition comprising Le Tombeau de Marcel Dupré (Volume 1), Six Concert Studies and Four Concert Rags (Volume 3), and Specula Petro, Hommage à César Franck, Pastorale and Fughetta, Sicilienne, Postlude and Livre d’Orgue (Volume 4).
