Bach’s major organ Preludes and Fugues rank among the most demanding works written for the instrument. Probably intended for recital rather than liturgical use, they may often have been practised at home on pedal harpsichord or pedal clavichord. Reflecting the Bach family’s tradition of composing for pairs of keyboards, this edition presents eight works arranged for two harpsichords, clavichords, organs or pianos. Based on the best surviving manuscript and printed sources, the arrangements exploit the possibilities of dialogue between two instruments, transforming virtuoso solo works into rewarding chamber music repertoire.
