Le Tombeau de Marcel Dupré is a striking homage to the great French organist-composer Marcel Dupré, composed between 1990 and 1992 by Gerald Hendrie. The suite initially comprised three substantial preludes and fugues—Toccata and Fugue, Prelude and Fugue, and Prelude and Fugue on B–A–C–H—each echoing, without imitating, the spirit and stylistic hallmarks of Dupré’s celebrated Trois Préludes et Fugues, Op. 7. These are works of character and technical brilliance, fusing contrapuntal rigour with rhythmic vitality and a bold harmonic language.
Following their composition, Hendrie added two further pieces—Two Sketches on the name B–A–C–H—in loose parallel to Dupré’s Deux Esquisses, Op. 41. Dedicated to and first performed by John Scott, these miniatures reflect the same elegance, invention, and architectural clarity found throughout the suite.
Now, for the first time, all four works are gathered into a single volume, newly revised by the composer especially for Lyrebird Music. This edition not only brings together a significant body of Hendrie’s organ writing, but also presents the definitive version of a suite that has gained growing attention among recitalists in the UK and beyond.
Gerald Hendrie’s organ music has recently enjoyed a renewed surge of interest, with the release of The Complete Organ Music, Vol. 1 on the Toccata Classics label. Performed by Tom Winpenny, this acclaimed recording has brought wider recognition to Hendrie’s distinctive voice.
Lyrebird Music is delighted to make this important edition available, and to continue its association with Gerald Hendrie through the publication of several of his major works.
